The Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Joseph Ikpea, has thrown his weight behind Governor Monday Okpebholo’s proposal for the speedy trial of kidnappers and cultists in Edo State, saying prompt justice is crucial to tackling insecurity.

Senator Ikpea, in a statement issued from his Ewatto country home in Esan South-East Local Government Area, also commended Governor Okpebholo for the recent crackdown on kidnapping syndicates operating in parts of the state, particularly the rescue of a woman abducted at the popular Vegetable Market in Benin City and the arrest of one of the suspects involved in the crime.

The Edo State Police Command, alongside Governor Okpebholo, on Thursday paraded suspected kidnappers, including a suspect linked to the Vegetable Market abduction. During the event, the governor reiterated his commitment to facilitating the establishment of a special court to ensure the speedy trial of suspected kidnappers and cultists, while also pledging continued support for security agencies in the fight against crime.

In recognition of the professionalism and effectiveness displayed by the police in rescuing the victim and apprehending a suspect, Governor Okpebholo announced a cash reward of N10 million for the security operatives involved.

“Governor Okpebholo’s prompt directive to the Edo State Police Command to track down the perpetrators of the Vegetable Market kidnapping immediately after the incident demonstrates strong leadership and a firm commitment to the safety of Edo people,” Ikpea said.

He noted that the successful rescue operation and arrest of a suspect send a clear warning to criminal elements that Edo State is no longer a safe haven for unlawful activities.
“As the senator representing Edo Central, I reaffirm my commitment to working closely with the state government and security agencies to ensure the safety of our people and communities.

“I am equally committed to collaborating with my colleagues representing other senatorial districts to support initiatives that will strengthen security and safeguard lives and property across Edo State,” he added.

Senator Ikpea further urged residents to embrace security as a collective responsibility, stressing that active community participation remains critical to defeating crime.

“When everyone plays a role in ensuring security, criminal elements will have no hiding place. They will either abandon their activities or leave the state altogether because they will realise that Edo State is hostile to crime and criminals,” he said.
