Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Joseph Ikpea, has called on local government councils across the country to adopt community driven security initiatives to tackle the growing challenges of banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
Speaking with journalists in Benin City, the senator argued that sustainable solutions to insecurity must begin at the grassroots, where local authorities have a better understanding of the peculiar security challenges within their communities.
Ikpea said some security infrastructure he initiated as Chairman of Esan South-East Local Government Area years ago has become critical to ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat crime in parts of Edo Central.
According to him, the security outposts strategically constructed along major routes in the council area are currently being used by military personnel and other security operatives in the fight against kidnapping and related crimes.
He noted that although the facilities were built at a time when insecurity was not as severe as it is today, they have proved invaluable in supporting security operations across the district.
The senator disclosed that provision has been made in the 2026 budget for the maintenance of the security facilities and other community focused projects aimed at improving the welfare of residents.
“Security, like politics, is local. Every local government chairman must develop practical strategies that address the unique security concerns of their communities. The security outposts we established years ago have today become vital assets in protecting our people,” he said.
Ikpea also highlighted several developmental projects executed during his tenure as council chairman, including the construction of a magistrate court in Ubiaja, the provision of water and electricity facilities at the council secretariat, and the donation of medical equipment to health centres across the local government area.
He further revealed that as a former member of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), he facilitated the renovation of several public primary schools and contributed to the employment of over 500 teachers in the state.
The senator commended Governor Monday Okpebholo’s development agenda and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at improving security and infrastructure across Edo State.
