From Business to Public Service: Why Sunny Aguebor Is Emerging as NDC’s Strongest Bet for Edo South Senate
Hon. Sunny Aguebor, popularly known as BIBI, has steadily built a reputation as a successful businessman, philanthropist and political leader whose influence extends across Edo State. His political journey, which began in the early 2000s with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has evolved into a determined quest to represent Edo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
Now flying the flag of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 senatorial election, Aguebor carries the party’s aspirations of securing representation in one of Edo State’s most politically strategic districts.
His public image reflects a strong connection to Edo’s cultural heritage. Often seen in traditional attire adorned with coral beads and the symbolic red cap, Aguebor projects both cultural pride and grassroots identity. His campaign message, “Prosperity Through Service: A New Dawn for Edo South,” underscores his commitment to people-centred leadership and inclusive development.
Beyond the campaign trail, Aguebor has established himself as a philanthropist through the BIBI Foundation, which has touched countless lives through scholarships, youth empowerment initiatives, skills acquisition programmes and employment opportunities. These interventions have earned him recognition not only in Oredo Local Government Area but across Edo State.
Supporters describe him as a compassionate industrialist whose passion for empowering the less privileged has translated into meaningful community development. His philanthropic record has strengthened his political appeal by demonstrating a longstanding commitment to improving lives beyond election seasons.
One notable example was his 60th birthday celebration, during which he distributed over 10,000 litres of fuel to residents, a gesture supporters viewed as another demonstration of his dedication to community welfare and social responsibility.
Aguebor’s leadership philosophy combines service with development. His supporters argue that his greatest strength lies not in political rhetoric but in practical interventions that have positively impacted communities through consistent grassroots engagement and support for party structures.
His political trajectory also reflects adaptability and strategic thinking. After serving as a founding member and major financier of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Aguebor joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in May 2026, describing the party as a fresh platform that represents hope for a new Nigeria.
Over the years, he has contested elective positions, including the House of Representatives, while maintaining his ambition to represent Edo South in the Senate. His emergence as the NDC’s senatorial candidate followed a unanimous endorsement by delegates at the party’s congress, with the National Secretariat subsequently ratifying his nomination.
Accepting the mandate, Aguebor said:
“I am deeply humbled by the confidence and trust reposed in me by members of our great party. This victory is not about me but about the collective desire of our people for quality representation and sustainable development. I remain committed to the ideals of service, inclusiveness and prosperity, and by the grace of God, we shall usher in a new dawn for Edo South Senatorial District.”
A Five-Point Agenda for Edo South
Aguebor’s campaign is anchored on a five-point development agenda focused on:
Youth empowerment
Economic development and job creation
Infrastructure renewal
Quality education
Improved healthcare delivery
He believes empowering young people through skills development, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities will unlock the district’s enormous human potential.
His economic agenda seeks to promote small and medium-scale enterprises, encourage investment and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive while attracting greater federal opportunities to the district.
On infrastructure, Aguebor has pledged to champion improved roads, electricity, water supply and public facilities through effective legislative advocacy and oversight.
His education agenda focuses on improving learning facilities, supporting educational opportunities and expanding access to quality education, while his healthcare plan prioritises stronger primary healthcare services and improved access to quality medical care across Edo South.
While many political candidates make similar promises, Aguebor’s supporters argue that his track record of philanthropy and community development distinguishes him from others. They believe his years of investment in people through the BIBI Foundation demonstrate both the capacity and commitment required for effective representation.
For the NDC, Aguebor’s candidacy represents a blend of business experience, grassroots mobilisation and community service. As the 2027 elections approach, the central question before Edo South voters will be whether his record of philanthropy, enterprise and leadership can translate into impactful representation at the National Assembly.
His supporters are convinced that it can. They believe his campaign offers not just a political ambition, but a vision anchored on service, development and inclusive prosperity for the people of Edo South.
