The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has called on healthcare professionals to apply the knowledge and skills acquired through the ongoing NIDCOM Diaspora Medical Health Impact Initiative to enhance patient care and improve healthcare outcomes nationwide.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu made the call recently while addressing participants at the three-day programme in Benin City, themed “Endometriosis Ultrasound National Capacity Building Program” for gynecologists, radiologists, sonographers, and reproductive health practitioners.
Speaking at the training, which was organised by UBTH in collaboration with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMoH), the CMD emphasised the importance of continuous capacity building in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.
She explained that the programme was designed to improve the expertise of gynecologists, radiologists, sonographers, and other reproductive health practitioners in the diagnosis and management of endometriosis through advanced ultrasound techniques.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu urged participants to make the most of the opportunity provided by the training and to translate the knowledge gained into improved patient care and better health outcomes. She also called on stakeholders to deepen collaboration in advancing Nigeria’s healthcare sector through innovation, education, and professional excellence.
The UBTH Chief Medical Director expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, for their support, leadership, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.
In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Afekhide Omoti, commended the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) for its leadership in fostering meaningful engagement between Nigeria and its citizens in the diaspora.
He noted that Nigerian medical professionals abroad continue to distinguish themselves globally, bringing honour to the country through their expertise and significant contributions to healthcare.
Prof. Omoti reaffirmed the NMA’s commitment to working closely with NIDCOM, government institutions, healthcare stakeholders, development partners, and diaspora organisations to promote excellence and sustainable development in Nigeria’s health sector.
The training, held at the Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI), University of Benin (UNIBEN), attracted distinguished local and international experts, including Dr. Uche Menakaya, a gynecologist and endoscopic surgeon from Australia, Prof. Francesco Cigni of the University of Milan, Italy Prof. Ligita Jokubkiene of Lund University, Sweden, and Juliet Menakaya from Australia.
