The Edo State Government has reiterated its commitment to ending child marriage and protecting the rights of the girl child, with the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, commending Governor Monday Okpebholo for prioritising the welfare, safety, and development of children across the state.
In a statement commemorating the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, Abdallah highlighted the importance of protecting girls from early marriage, abuse, exploitation, and other harmful practices. This year’s theme is “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights.”
The Commissioner praised Governor Okpebholo for providing the leadership and support necessary to strengthen child protection and promote the rights and well-being of children in Edo State.
She also highlighted the various programmes, sensitisation campaigns, and advocacy initiatives undertaken by the Ministry to raise awareness and promote the implementation of the Child Rights Law in the state.
Abdallah noted that child marriage deprives girls of their childhood, education, and access to essential healthcare, while limiting their opportunities to fulfil their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
She stressed that every girl deserves access to quality education, adequate protection, and the freedom to pursue her aspirations without the threat of early marriage or other harmful practices.
The Commissioner called on parents, traditional rulers and religious leaders, community stakeholders, civil society organisations, and other relevant institutions to support collective efforts to end child marriage and strengthen the protection of girls’ rights across the state.
She assured residents that the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development would sustain its advocacy efforts and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure that every girl child in Edo State grows up in a safe, supportive, and empowering environment.
“Investing in the girl child is investing in the future of Edo State. We must work collectively to end child marriage, uphold the Child Rights Law, and ensure that every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and realise her full potential,” the Commissioner stated.
