OPOBO TOWN, Rivers State — Tears, heartfelt tributes and fond memories characterised the burial ceremony of late Mrs. Matilda Mina Nwobodo (née Dan Jaja), mother of Mrs. Kate Chika Abayomi, Rivers State Correspondent of De-Patriot News, who was laid to rest in Opobo town, Rivers State, on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Family members, friends, former colleagues, church members and well-wishers gathered to honour the memory of the late educationist, whose life was celebrated for her dedication to teaching, strong Christian faith, discipline and commitment to raising responsible children.

The officiating minister, Ven. Emmanuel Nwuju, Vicar and Archdeacon of St. Paul Anglican Church, Opobo, urged the congregation to live meaningful lives and make positive contributions to society while they still had the opportunity.
Describing life as a market with unpredictable outcomes, the cleric reminded the congregation that death was not determined by age alone but ultimately lay beyond human control.
“Some may come early and go early, while some may come early and go late. In all, everyone should endeavour to live well and make a positive impact while alive,” he said.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the former Chairman of Eleme Local Government Council, Hon. Prince Mike Ejire, KSC, fondly described the deceased as “Mama Tony,” recalling her invaluable contributions to the lives of those around her.

He described her as a pillar of support and a mother to many, noting that she was like a daily teacher who never hesitated to correct, guide and encourage people whenever the need arose. He prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul.
In an emotional tribute, Mrs. Kate Chika Abayomi, daughter of the deceased and Rivers State Correspondent of De-Patriot News, described her mother as loving, caring, disciplined, prayerful and deeply committed to the Christian faith.
She explained that her mother instilled strong moral values and discipline in her children, principles she said had significantly shaped her life and that of her brother. She expressed gratitude for the enduring lessons and values her mother left behind.
Born on June 20, 1937, into a royal family in Opobo town, the late Mrs. Nwobodo began her teaching career in the former Eastern Region before the Nigerian Civil War. A professionally trained educationist, she obtained an Associate Certificate in Education (ACE) and a bachelor’s degree in education, having pursued studies at the University of Ibadan between 1967 and 1970 and later at the University of Port Harcourt in 1997.
She joined the Rivers State Public Service on September 1, 1970, and served as a classroom teacher for several years before being appointed a headmistress. In that capacity, she headed several schools in Port Harcourt, leaving her mark on the education sector through years of dedicated service.
The late Mrs. Nwobodo, who passed away on May 11, 2026, at the age of 88, was a devoted member of Christ Church Interdenominational Church, Port Harcourt, and St. Paul Anglican Church, Opobo.
She is survived by her two children, Mr. Anthony Nwobodo and Mrs. Chika Abayomi (née Nwobodo), as well as her in-laws, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives, including Pastor John Aboyemi.
Among those present at the burial were staff members of Bogel, representatives of Christ Church Interdenominational Church, Port Harcourt, neighbours, friends and other well-wishers who gathered to pay their final respects to a woman remembered for her faith, discipline, generosity and dedication to family and society.
Though her passing has left a deep void in the hearts of her loved ones, the values she imparted, the lives she touched and the legacy she built through education and motherhood will remain a lasting testament to a life well spent.
