The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening family wellbeing and protecting vulnerable children as the world commemorates the 2026 International Day of Families.
According to a statement personally signed by Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, the Ministry joined the global community in marking this year’s celebration with the themed: “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing.”
The Commissioner noted that the theme draws global attention to the increasing inequalities affecting families and the direct impact such challenges have on the wellbeing, protection, education, and future of children.
She explained that the theme also underscores the urgent need for stronger family oriented policies and social protection systems capable of supporting healthy child development and promoting equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their background.
Hon. Abdallah stressed that families remain the foundation of every society and play a vital role in raising responsible, productive, and compassionate citizens. She, however, lamented that many families continue to grapple with economic hardship, unemployment, insecurity, rising cost of living, and limited access to healthcare and education, among other social challenges affecting the stability and wellbeing of children.
The statement further reaffirmed that the Edo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, remains committed to implementing policies and programmes aimed at strengthening family life, protecting vulnerable children, promoting social inclusion, and improving access to welfare services for women, children, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups across the state.
The Ministry also called on parents, caregivers, community leaders, civil society organisations, religious bodies, and development partners to work together in creating safe, supportive, and nurturing environments where every child can thrive irrespective of social or economic status.
The statement further added that investing in families remains essential to national development, as stable and well supported families are the foundation for stronger communities and a more prosperous society.
Hon. Abdallah reiterated that the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development remains steadfast in its mandate to promote the welfare, dignity, and protection of families across Edo State.
