The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, has congratulated the Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, and the hospital’s management on the successful commissioning of the Geriatric Library and Lounge.

The commendation was contained in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday in Benin City, jointly signed by the Edo NMA Chairman, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, and the Secretary, Dr. Iluobe Inegbenosun.

According to Dr. Oseghale, the landmark facility, generously donated by Chief Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, represents a significant milestone in advancing geriatric healthcare and improving the well-being of elderly patients.

He commended Chief Ahonaruogho for his philanthropy and unwavering commitment to promoting the health, dignity, and welfare of senior citizens in Edo State, noting that such private-sector interventions are worthy of emulation.

Describing the project as highly commendable, the association said the Geriatric Library and Lounge provides “a dedicated space for learning, relaxation, social interaction, and psychosocial support for our elderly patients and their caregivers.”

The association also applauded Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu for her visionary leadership and the UBTH management for prioritising specialised care for the ageing population.
“The Geriatric Library and Lounge aligns with global best practices in healthy ageing and further reinforces UBTH’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading teaching hospitals.

“With Nigeria’s elderly population on the rise, facilities such as this are essential to promoting mental well-being, improving health literacy, and enhancing clinical outcomes. Access to a conducive environment and relevant educational resources will ensure that our senior citizens receive care that is both compassionate and dignified,” the statement read.

The Edo NMA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives, strategic partnerships, and policies aimed at advancing clinical practice, strengthening healthcare delivery, and improving the quality of life of patients across Edo State.
