The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has expressed profound appreciation to the Ahonaruogho Family for donating a state-of-the-art Geriatrics Library and Lounge to the hospital in memory of their patriarch, Pa Jeremiah Olu Oma Ahonaruogho.
Speaking at the commissioning of the facility on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Prof. Ize-Iyamu described the donation as a remarkable act of philanthropy that extends beyond the provision of a physical structure, noting that it reflects a shared commitment to improving the quality of life and overall well-being of elderly patients.
According to the Chief Medical Director, the care of older persons goes beyond medical treatment to include the creation of an environment that promotes comfort, dignity, relaxation, social interaction, and meaningful engagement.
She noted that the Geriatrics Library and Lounge offers a welcoming space where elderly patients can enjoy companionship, mental stimulation, and emotional support as part of their healthcare experience.
“We are gathered here not merely to unveil a facility, but to celebrate a life defined by values that continue to inspire us integrity, excellence, discipline, and service. This library and lounge represents a more compassionate approach to healthcare, one that recognises every patient as a person deserving of dignity, respect, and quality care,” she said.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu expressed the hospital’s deep appreciation to the Ahonaruogho Family, led by Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, noting that their generosity would have a lasting impact on generations of patients and caregivers.
She also urged other public-spirited individuals and organisations to emulate the family’s gesture by partnering with the hospital through its “Adopt-a-Ward/Facility” initiative.
“We have created opportunities for well-meaning individuals to build a lasting legacy of healing by adopting a ward or healthcare facility. We invite you to partner with us as we continue transforming healthcare, one facility at a time,” she added.
In his remarks, Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, explained that the family’s decision to donate the facility was inspired by the exceptional care their late father received at UBTH. He said the project was their way of expressing gratitude to the hospital while contributing to improved care for elderly patients.
The commissioning ceremony attracted several distinguished guests, including Madam Josephine Ahonaruogho and Mrs. Mojisola Ahonaruogho, mother and wife of Prince Ahonaruogho, respectively, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Chairman of the UNIBEN Trust Development Fund; and Prof. Eddy Erhagbe, who represented the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Prof. Afekhide Omoti, President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Eustace Oseghale, Chairman of the NMA, Edo State Branch, Prof. Roli Madubuko of the Department of Internal Medicine, UBTH, former President of the UNIBEN Alumni Association, Prof. Alfred Ehigiegbai, Dr. Jude Osagie, Chief Executive Officer of Precious Palm Royal Hotel, Emmanuel Oriazuwa, Esq., and several other stakeholders.
The newly commissioned facility is expected to enhance the quality of care for elderly patients by providing a conducive environment for learning, relaxation, social interaction, and psychosocial support, while also benefiting healthcare professionals involved in geriatric care.
