UBTH CMD Strengthens Security, Lights Up Staff Quarters with Solar Initiative

Residents of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Staff Quarters have expressed excitement following the installation of over 100 solar-powered streetlights by the hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu.

The solar-powered streetlights, which now illuminate the staff quarters and surrounding areas, were officially commissioned on July 21, 2026.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony through the Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (Clinicals), Dr. Philip Osho who represented Prof. Ize-Iyamu stated that the initiative was designed to enhance security and improve the welfare of staff residing within the quarters.

She noted that the lack of adequate lighting had previously exposed residents to security risks, as the area was often in darkness at night. According to the CMD, the installation of the solar-powered streetlights will significantly improve visibility, strengthen security, and foster a safer environment for staff and their families.

The Chairman of the Occupants of UBTH Quarters Association, Dr. Taiwo Oyewumi, expressed deep appreciation to the Chief Medical Director for what he described as an unprecedented intervention. He observed that the installation of the solar-powered streetlights represents a significant milestone in the history of the staff quarters and reflects management’s commitment to staff welfare.

Also speaking, the Manager of the Corporate Services and Partnership Unit, Mr. Pedro Abure, commended Prof. Ize-Iyamu for her visionary leadership and impactful initiatives. He noted that the staff quarters community is undergoing remarkable transformation under her administration and described the streetlight project as evidence of her commitment to providing a conducive and secure living environment for staff.
