Edo Women Affairs Commissioner Urges Women to Rise Above Betrayal, Adversity

The Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, has urged women to remain focused on their dreams and life purpose, stressing that adversity, betrayal and difficult experiences should not be allowed to define their destinies.

Abdallah spoke as a panelist at the 2026 South South Girls Rock Press Event and Dinner, organised by Empire TV in collaboration with the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in Benin City. Speaking on the theme, “How I Survived My Dark Days as a Woman,” she shared personal experiences from her career in the banking sector and political life, including workplace betrayal, difficult relationships and other challenges.

The Commissioner recalled how a trusted colleague undermined her during a promotion process. Rather than allowing the setback to discourage her, she said she regarded the experience as an opportunity that eventually paved the way for her emergence as a commissioner.

Abdallah emphasised the importance of self-reliance, emotional strength and having a dependable support system, identifying her children and her mentor, Rt. Hon. Festus Ebea, as sources of encouragement during difficult periods. She advised women to spend time alone when necessary, reflect on their experiences and learn to become their own source of motivation.

“Dark hours are learning hours,” she declared, urging women to transform their trials into lessons that would prepare them for a stronger and better future. She stressed that every challenge could provide an opportunity for growth if approached with resilience and the determination to move forward.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Edo State, Rt. Hon. Festus Ebea, highlighted the vulnerability of single mothers and widows, noting that difficult circumstances could expose women to exploitation and manipulation. He stressed the need for financial independence, personal accountability and preparedness.

Ebea urged women not to place their entire financial and emotional security in the hands of partners, friends or associates, encouraging them to cultivate personal enterprise and take responsibility for their destinies.

Other speakers, including the Proprietress of Cheldam International School, Nma Kande Okoigi, founder of Ruru World Event, Mrs. Helen Izore and the Proprietress of Victorious Mega Kitchen, Mrs. Mabel Iyonagbe, shared inspiring accounts of overcoming personal struggles, business setbacks, betrayal and humble beginnings. They demonstrated how resilience, determination, faith and continuous self-development could turn difficult experiences into successful enterprises and meaningful contributions to society.

In his welcome remarks, JoJo Dominic of Empire TV and Project Coordinator, highlighted the vital role of women as nurturers, mentors and pillars of society, calling for greater recognition of the achievements and potential of South South women beyond traditional stereotypes. Reflecting on the role of mentorship in his modelling career, he also emphasised the need to guide young people away from cultism, violence and other negative influences.

He explained that South South Girls Rock was established to provide young women with networking opportunities, positive role models and a safe platform for meaningful conversations, collaboration and empowerment. The event, held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the New Civil Service Recreational Club and Event Centre, Benin City, brought together women from diverse backgrounds to share experiences, celebrate achievements and promote resilience, empowerment and personal growth.
