The Pharmacy Department of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) joined pharmacists worldwide in commemorating World Pharmacists Day 2026, calling for greater recognition of the profession’s role in advancing quality healthcare delivery.
The celebration, held on Friday, September 25, 2026, was themed “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures.”
As part of the activities marking the day, the Pharmacy Department, led by its head, Dr. (Mrs.) Edith Yovwin, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, to highlight pharmacists’ vital contributions to patient care, medication safety, health education, research and innovation.
The delegation was received on behalf of the Chief Medical Director by the DCMAC, Research and Ethics, Prof. Adebola Ehizele, who appreciated the pharmacists for the engagement and their continued contributions to the hospital’s healthcare services.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu commended pharmacists for their invaluable contributions to quality healthcare delivery, noting their critical role in ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines and improving patient outcomes.
The celebration also provided an opportunity for the Pharmacy Department to acknowledge the developmental strides recorded under the Chief Medical Director’s leadership and emphasise the importance of sustained collaboration among healthcare professionals in achieving better patient-centred care.
World Pharmacists Day is observed annually on September 25 to recognise pharmacists’ essential contributions to global health, medication safety, patient care and the advancement of healthcare systems.
