As part of its SHINE Agenda, the Edo State Government, through the Directorate of Education Quality and Accountability (DEQA), has strengthened leadership capacity by training school principals across the state in conflict resolution and safety management, effective communication, and school safety management.

The training, held on April 13, 14 and 21, 2026, at Annunciation Catholic College, Irrua, Edo University, Iyamho, and the John Odigie Oyegun Training Centre respectively, was organized by DEQA in collaboration with SUBEB, SSEB and BTVET. A total of 550 principals participated, with 273 from Edo South, 114 from Edo Central, and 163 from Edo North.

Speaking at the workshop themed “Leading with Accountability,” the Director General of DEQA, Dr. Amen Ogbemudia, emphasized that effective school leadership goes beyond administration to include conflict management, peacebuilding, and fostering a safe learning environment. She noted that while conflict is inevitable in schools, its management determines its impact.

“Conflict is not the problem; how it is handled is key,” she stated, stressing that poor conflict management can disrupt learning and weaken relationships.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Edith Ebomwoyi, commended the initiative and urged principals to promote unity and adopt proactive conflict resolution strategies. Similarly, the Chairman of SSEB, Dr. Rita Erewele, expressed confidence that the training would reduce conflict related cases in schools.

The workshop highlighted communication as a vital leadership tool and introduced practical strategies such as active listening, dialogue, and structured frameworks like SHINE, STAR, and FINEBOY to guide effective decision-making and conflict resolution.
Participants were also equipped with skills to identify root causes of conflict, manage disputes professionally, and build a culture of respect, fairness, and teamwork within schools.
Reiterating the importance of leadership, Dr. Ogbemudia noted that self awareness and self control are essential for effective management.
The initiative forms part of the Edo State Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance education quality, strengthen accountability, and ensure safe learning environments across public schools.
